Truly classic, 05 Aug 2008
Resident Evil 2 is so good that I recently played through it three times in one sitting (one of the few benefits of unemployment is the abundance of free time). From the opening FMVs and that first awesome section dashing through Raccoon City ("the next thing I knew, the entire city was infested with zombies") through to the Police Headquarters, cavernous sewers and the then-traditional laboratory-set ending, this game exudes quality through and through.
While some were put off by it, the Resident Evil control system was in my mind perfect, and only improved upon in Resident Evil 4 (which much of contemporary gaming owes A LOT to). The soundtrack is incredible, with each and every scene scored with the perfect blend of atmosphere and action, or whichever was necessary. The sound effects are excellent, a huge step up from the somewhat comical zombies or the first game, now moaning discomfortingly rather than hilariously. The graphics are of course hugely dated, but you can't fault the design of the game. Enemy characters shuffle and shamble realistically, speeding up when their prey is within range, clawing along the floor when they've parted way with their legs and taking bullets with more than a mere step back, another leap from the arms-outstretched grey (!) zombies of before. While the backgrounds are pre-rendered in 2D, each is totally eerie, cold and at times genuinely upsetting when it comes to life-like quality. The undead-dominated world of Resident Evil 2 makes for a very oppressive feel indeed.
Also of note is the voice acting, which is for the most part still rubbish, but again a vast improvement over the first. Sadly, the live action scenes are gone too, but it all adds up to make RE2 a much more serious game than its progenitor. Its not often enough games improve this much on their predecessor, and a major complaint of the sequel (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis) was that it ran on the RE2 engine, which to me is no bad thing as it allowed the game to be released mere months after 2.
Finally, and most importantly, the game is scary as hell, from Mr. X smashing through walls to falling through the floor in the library (who didn't jump the first time around?) to the final confrontation with the flaming tyrant, this game mixes the perfect amount of mood with jump scares to keep things fresh. The replay value is high also, with the game being split into two distinct chapters which play out differently depending on which character you choose to begin with, as well as two bonus games which aren't easily unlocked and command you come back for more. Long story short, its one of those rare games that surprises you with much, much more when you thought you'd finished it.
As my opening comment suggests, the game is quite short, easily completed by a veteran like myself in a little over an hour and a half, but for newbies it ought to keep you entertained for long enough to make your purchase worthwhile. Might I recommend you buy the Nintendo Gamecube version, as it plays much smoother than previous versions, allows cutscene-skipping (for those all important second playthroughs) and offers a few other neat bonuses, as well as suiting the GC controller perfectly.
It may not have redefined gaming necessarily, and it's not even the best in the series, but this is a classic well worth investing in, either for first timers or fans nostalgic for the golden years of PSOne. For its combination of story, atmosphere and action, few other games of that era come close.
This is one of the best horror games ever made, 03 Oct 2007
The plot of the game is just like the one of the second RE movie: the zombies and monsters have conquered Racoon City.
The atmosphere at the game is so tight that you are scared when you play it at night when it is dark outside and your're alone in the dark.
The gameplay is not so difficult but beginners should practise a bit before starting the missions.

ok, i have seen some comments people are leaving for this game about the graphics, saying its ps1 graphics... this game was originally released on the ps1 before gamecube, so the company just changed the game from ps1 to gamecube without changing the graphics, if you got a ps1, buy this game, dont buy a gamecube to buy it... my bro said: gamecubes were made for resident evil games, that means they have better graphics, they dont, same graphics. so, dont buy gamecube just to get these games if your a fan, they cost more money because of the 2 discs and the bigger case.. buy all of them on the ps1, go to www.mobygames.com and u can download the gamecube cases, so, it will be like u bought them on gamecube but only 1 disk, and cheaper. well cheaper the ultimate survival horror, 07 May 2007
Yes the original resident evil started the horror genre but 2 took it to a whole new level the first was more puzzly, desperately searching for ammo adventure while this introduced the pulse pounding action & cool weapons.
Picking up a few months after where resi 1 left off disgraced S.T.A.R.S members have left the city in search of proof against the corporation umbrella the point mans sister Claire Redfield comes in search of him while rookie cop Leon s Kennedy arrives late for his first day upon discovering the city overrun with zombies they band together an attempt to escape the city whilst begin pursued by umbrellas hellish freaks.
Yes this is a port of the ps1 games with slightly improved graphics but its still 1 of the greatest games to ever grace a console & no amount of time will change that this is the pinnacle of the resi franchise essential even if only to revive undead memories without a doubt worth every penny you pay for it & then some.
Remake of Capcom's Finest Horror Series..., 19 Feb 2006
After playing the remake of the original resident evil and the brillant and underrated resident evil zero it is quite sad that how bored i am getting of resident evil. It isn't just how it looks either it is the simple fact that this game is so similiar to the others, the story is weak, and reminds me somewhat of a bmovie film horror. But the gameplay lacks it is exactly the same as the other resi's games i have played, i am becoming bored of this genre and running around find a key go back pick up some bullets shoot some zombies, it becomes repeative and when you complete the game there is no replay value shame, I was disappointed with this. But to complete the resident Evil series and to know more on the story it has to be looked into.

Stop moaning about it being a port, 09 Aug 2008
I just want to address those complaining that it is simply a port over, a carbon copy of the PS version.
Yes it is. Capcom never said it was going to be a full remake like RE1. This release is simply to allow GC users who may not have ever owned a Playstation or Dreamcast to finally own this game. I think them porting it over and releasing it for GC is a wonderful thing. Yes it 32- bit graphics, yes its exactly the same game, no there are no new bits or alternate layout with massively improved graphics. But with a game this good, do you really need it?
If you don't own this game on any other console, then get it, it is one of the best Res games out there and far superior to RE4. Ignore the people complaining about it only being a port over, they obviously are annoyed at themselves for not reading the information about this product clearly.
this game is brilliant and well worth a tenner if you don't have it on other consoles.
Five Stars!
"Starz" Creepy goings on in Raccoon City, 18 Jun 2007
This is my first "traditional" Resident Evil game after completing Resident evil 4 on my PS2, I thought the pre-rendered backgrounds and different controls would put me off a bit, but this game is fantastic.
Of course for Resident Evil fands who have experience of the series, they would have no problem with controls and know exactly what to expect from the series, but I didn't have a clue, and that just made it better...
The Pre-rendered backgrounds provide and excellent atmosphere for a game originally released for PS1, if it came in full 3D the experience wouldn't have been the same with dodgy polygons. Whilst charatcers are fairly simple looking, the enemies still look freaky and just great, minus the detail that comes with the advanced technology of the 6th Gen systems.
The game controls are perfect one you get used to them, and both the eerie sounds of the different locations and the puzzles and enemies you encounter are well thought up and provide an excellent gaming experience.
The main story of the game is Jill Valentine trying to escape from Raccoon City before it's destruction (which she is unaware of throughout most of the game) and trying to survive the zombies and getting hunted down by The Nemesis, that messed up dude you can see on the box art. His presence is genuinely terrifying, as you'll just be walking along and he'll stroll through the door, forcing you to make a quick in-game decision on what to do, which affects the overall ending. This idea of a choice is really good and it adds an extra level of interactiveness into this survival game. If you're not given a choice, you'll be legging it as fast as you can as he catches up to you really fast with a big rocket launcher. Scary times.
Now obviously the game is only scary the first time you play it, some would argue it's not even scary, but it does make you jump, which is great! If there are people of a nervous disposition, wondering whether this game is worth it, it is, it's got gore and some creepy scenes, but nothing that'll keep you up all night with the light on.
Overall it's a fantastic game, but it loses a star because of the fact it's a direct port of the PS1 game, and not remade like the original, also the game is quite short, and will take you 10 hours at the most to play through.
Highly recommended!
worth every penny, 07 May 2007
Ported from the ps1 with slightly improved graphics nemesis arrives on the game cube.
Picking up after the events of resi 1 S.T.A.R.S member Jill valentine finds the city overrun with zombies as she attempts to escape with the help of mercenaries only to be hounded by the unstoppable monster nemesis.
Yes it's the same game you played nearly a decade ago & as a result can feel slightly dated but deadly bosses & intense live action scenes, complete with bonus mercenaries mode make this an essential game to own. The last truly great resi until 4 its worthy every penny you pay for it & then some.
The nemesis returns, 24 Mar 2006
Resident evil 3 was origianally released in november 1997 and was a brilliant game. Jill was brought back from resi 1 and the story was that jill had to escape from the t-virus infected raccoon city. When it was released on gamecube in 2003, many people thought it would be like the gamecube version of resi 1 with amazing graphics and new parts. However, this like resi 2 on the cube has the same graphics (except for the arms and legs which have been smoothed out) as the original. But that dosn't matter. The nemesis is the best boss ever and meets you around fourteen times depending how you play the game. That is also another good feature. Just like the original at certain parts you can choose what to do next. it makes the game evn more fun. As well as this though, nicholai is in it and he is really cool, not as good as wesker though. Anyway, nemesis is bloody awesome and at parts is equipped with a rocket launcher. Half way through he loses this weapon and uses tentacles which is probably harder because you find yourself being slammed into the ground a lot and jill is proper slow at getting back up. The storyline is good and the game itself is probably better than resi 2. Even though in this game, the police station is in it too. There are some amazing weapons too such as handguns, assault rifles, grenade launchers, mine launchers, shotguns and the legendary magnum. There is also a bonus minigame which can help you earn even greater weapons such as a gatling gun. The city itself is full of monsters includin zombies, brain suckers, drain demos and the hunter. There are many locations and it is quite confusing in parts. Anyway this is a brilliant game no matter what anybody else says so GET IT NOW!!!

Product Description
For many, Metroid Prime remains the best GameCube game yet released. In many ways an atypical Nintendo title, with its first person adventuring and a dark sci-fi setting, the game was still full of the classic Nintendo magic with amazing graphics, perfect controls and incredible attention to detail. This new sequel expands on all these aspects as Samus Arran (perhaps the only non-gratuitous - considering she spends the entirety of the game in a big metal space suit - female character in video games) explores the planet Aether, which is mysteriously split between light and dark dimensions, with unique weapons and equipment only work in one or the other. This adds an extra layer of intricacy to the gameplay and storyline and also provides a prime excuse for lots more weapons, gadgets and visors (the sound based echo visor is particularly cool). Perhaps the most controversial new feature in the game though is a four-person multiplayer mode where you can use all of the game's power-ups and weapons. This actually works surprisingly well with the switch to a morph ball making it impossible to lock onto an enemy automatically, greatly adding to the tactical depth. It is the single player mode that is Metroid Prime 2's most important aspect though and there seems little chance that fans of the original will be disappointed. Those that felt the original was a little too hard and difficult to control will be catered for as well though, ensuring that this game is far more accessible than the previous one. --David Jenkins

Anyway, nemesis is awesome and at parts is equipped with a rocket launcher. Anyway this is a brilliant game no matter what anybody else says so GET IT NOW!!!

all i will say is if ur a metroid fan then get this game, it has all the fun of it plus extra things
Metroid Prime VS Halo, 26 Nov 2006
People keep claiming that Halo is the best game ever, but this game and the original beat Halo 1 & 2 by far. The gameplay is unique, fun and there is plenty to do unlike Halo's same classic style of FPS. The puzzle solving through using morph ball and through using different weapons to get to new places keeps one hooked.
This is very much like the original, but improved in every way.
Good, but slightly annoying like all Metroid titles, 12 Feb 2006
This is a good game, and is an improvement upon its predecessor in every way. Excellent graphics, sound, gameplay, weapons, storyline etc. (the others reviewers here have done a good job going through the positives). But as mentioned by some reviewers, the concept of backtracking (common to all metroid games) does get very annoying after a while. I managed to overcome it in Metroid prime, which took me about 3-4 months to finish as I frequently lost interest for large periods of time (but I always came back to it). With MP:echoes, I simply couldn't find the motivation to repeat it (not because its worse than its predecessor, its just having to go through the same experience again), it just wasn't enjoyable after a while. I've not touched the game in about 7 months ( I was around 25-30% through it). I really want to get back to it and finish it, but with the whole business of backtracking it feels more like going back to finish a chore.
The return of Samus Aran!, 03 Nov 2005
After leaving Tallon IV, from the previous game, she recieves a distress call, and ends up landing on Aether. Savage creatures have taken over the planet, and it has been divided between light Aether and Dark Aether. The inhabitants are all dead, but needless to say, they need you to destroy this enemy. This game's graphics are superb, from the temple you land in, to the barren wastelands, to the industrial complex towards the end. There is incredible detail in everything that you see, and this also includes the enemies. With over 50 unique enemies, and 4 major areas, this game leaves you drooling. The game is set in First Person Mode, meaning you see everything from Samus Aran's point of view. However, there are no restrictions. You can use the morphball to roll up into a tiny ball, so that you can enter areas you can't whilst your standing. You can double jump to reach the higher places, and use the grapple beam to make it accross long ravines, but this is not all. The game makes you progress in a set order by allowing you to unlock doors only when you have achived the item to unlock them. I.e. Cant open light doors untill you have the light beam. To do this, you need to defeat the bosses that are scattered, and this even includes a dark copy of Samus Aran. This means that whilst this initially restricts your movement at the start, you can never go trully wrong. All of the enemies can be scanned, and even some of the manuscripts, to reveal more about what happened on the planet. Technology can also be scanned so that a log book can be filled with intricate detail, this is a game in itself. There are so many things to unlock, such as morph ball bombs, dark and light beam, missile cannons and different area's that this will keep you going for days. The major addition is that you can travel between the light world and the dark world, via portals. In Aether the air is poisonous, so you must be carful, and only through doing this, will you be able to complete your journey, by accessing places you can't reach in the light world, in the dark, did i mention these all contain different enemies! This game is hot, and the sound is even better, eerie in places, whilst the boss music is fab. In short, this game is a must for anyone with a gamecube, however, it does get rather difficult towards the end, so it is not for the faint hearted.
Metroid tedious 2 Echoes, 10 Jul 2005
I agree with that Jonty guy, yeah good game but all the tedious running around looking for keys and stuff in the same places is so tedious! I saw Nintendo Magazine give this 97% and i thought "That must be a missprint!" I'd probably give it something inbetween 80% and 90% but hey that's just me, you might like it. But all the complicated stuff like aether and luminoth just sounds like rocket science or something, this is the absolute opposite to simple! The graphics are good and the gameplay's pretty good but why when you think you've finished in that first world (i can't remember what it's called) and you're onto the new world called Dark Torvus Bog (which i found amusing) you suddenly find that you have to go back to that first world again! And that isn't it, you retrace your steps so much in this game you loose count! And whoever decided to make it so you can't save when you press start you have to go to a stupid save station ought to be shot! I lost interest after i had got so far but lost it all because i couldn't save for about the ONE MILLIONTH TIME! If you like complicated crap that somehow comes together to make a game the buy this!

Enjoy the creepy haunting! Graphics, 18 Aug 2007
ok, i have seen some comments people are leaving for this game about the graphics, saying its ps1 graphics... this game was originally released on the ps1 before gamecube, so the company just changed the game from ps1 to gamecube without changing the graphics, if you got a ps1, buy this game, dont buy a gamecube to buy it... my bro said: gamecubes were made for resident evil games, that means they have better graphics, they dont, same graphics. so, dont buy gamecube just to get these games if your a fan, they cost more money because of the 2 discs and the bigger case.. buy all of them on the ps1, go to www.mobygames.com and u can download the gamecube cases, so, it will be like u bought them on gamecube but only 1 disk, and cheaper. well cheaper the ultimate survival horror, 07 May 2007
Yes the original resident evil started the horror genre but 2 took it to a whole new level the first was more puzzly, desperately searching for ammo adventure while this introduced the pulse pounding action & cool weapons.

Bloody Brilliant!, 26 Jun 2008
Mario smash football is one of the best Mario games yet,you can do all kinds of cool things like take super strikes, headbut players into the electric panels and be all the Mario players in creation.
Best Football Game EVER!, 13 May 2007
I love this game soooo much. It's like Ice-Hockey meets Football. The game is absolutley mental, shells, banana skins, electrified fences, the ability to take out your oponents and the occasional visit from a giant bowser make the game hard to follow at first, but then once you've grasped the rapid gameplay, you'll love it.
The main thing in this game is multiplayer, you can set up your own league with like 8 teams, each player having there own team. I think this is better as it gets a bit complicated when you have 4 players on one team. The noises are great too, the screams you get from Peach or DK when you hit them into the electric fence are wiked.
I'd also advise taking the power-ups and bowser attack off when you get a bit further in the game. The power-ups are fine for messing around with your mates, but they are well annoying in single player. The main thing is to turn off the rubbish bowser attacks, they absolutley ruin the game!
This game is a great break from usual football games like Fifa or PES, but hardcore Footballers will not like. Just could do with a few more charecters and pitches. Definate Buy.
Almost there, but not quite, 09 Apr 2006
This title was a bit of an unknown for me as I hadn't heard much coverage until I saw an advert on the TV. Being a big fan of Mario Power Tennis, I waited for the prices to come down a bit, and saw it second hand on Amazon. Having played this game through, I can safely say it is seriously fun. You will enjoy this game. It is rough and tumble football action with all your favourite Mario characters and sidekicks. Playing through all the cups a couple of times is great fun, and multi-player mode is quite enjoyable. This is a superb Mario sports game. Super strikes are executed brilliantly, with a nice little cinematic where the control pad rumbles violently to really give the player a sense of power. These are a little samey though between characters, with the same sound effect present on everyone and the animation very similar. So why is it "Almost there", well quite simply because Nintendo aren't quite there yet with difficulty settings. With Mario Power Tennis the difficulty levels are fantastic as they work you up gradually to becoming a pro at the game. With Mario Smash Football however, this appears to have gone out the window. There are still four difficulties, but the gap between the first and second is just too great. You will yawn at Novice after the first few games, but you will scream at Professional, the next one up, because tackles, power-ups and goals become all to frequent on the enemies part. Suddenly you find yourself 10-0 up in the first minute. Another irritation I found with the game is the unnecessary giant Bowser that comes in mid-match. Nintendo have probably thrown this in to mix things up a bit and sprinkle some "Nintendo-magic" over the game. All it does is spoil the flow of the game, and when you're playing on Professional or above its the last thing you want. This should have been left out simply to let us play some fluent football. Why not give us Bowser as a character instead of an irritation? All the above said, the game is well worth getting if only for the multi-player mode, which, like every Mario sports game, is where the party really starts!
EXCELLENT, 19 Feb 2006
This has to be the best Mario Sports title on teh 'Cube. It's very surprising it doesn't have the Violence icon on the case, as this game is on quite the violent side, not usually how football is, with wusses falling over and crying because someone tapped them with their little finger. The game could be improved by having more characters such as Goombas or Shy Guys being able to play on your team, but there is some brilliantly deep gameplay with simple, easy to learn controls, especially for players of EA Sports games. The only reasons this gets 4 Stars rather than 5 is due to the lack of depth of the single player and lack of options (making Super Strikes worth more or less goals, lack of choice of characters) Overall this is a brilliant game, ESPECIALLY in multiplayer. Hearing Peaches scream, which actually sounds like she's in a lot of pain, makes it even better.
Simply Perfect, 15 Dec 2005
Not much more to say except that this game is immense fun, perfectly balanced and simplicity really wins the day.

Anyway this is a brilliant game no matter what anybody else says so GET IT NOW!!!

all i will say is if ur a metroid fan then get this game, it has all the fun of it plus extra things
Mixed Ratings?, 10 Feb 2006
This game has been getting _extremely_ mixed reviews, and I can't understand why. Perhaps because everyone had been looking forward to it for such a long time, and it resulted in an anticlimax (which happens to anything you build up too much). Edge magazine, the only publication I trust, gave this 40%. That just isn't fair. Then on the other hand the highest rating it's received is 88%. There's something very wrong here, and for all of you who are confused, I'll try and give a heads up by listing fors and againsts below (hopefully an analytical approach like this will help clear up confusion): Against: - Some of the dialogue is poor ... _really_ poor. - The graphics are too N64-ish. - The story doesn't really make sense (I'm a ghost, but I can't go through walls? For: - I couldn't stop playing this, it's addictive. - I actually like the N64-ish graphics. Nostalgia? N.B. Don't get me wrong, the graphics aren't that bad anyway. - The story, though nonsensicle (see above), is involving and fun. - Dark _and_ funny. - The possession power isn't a gimmick, it adds a great deal to the gameplay. For one thing you don't get bored with your characters abilities (since you keep possessing people and things). - Solid non-license gaming. Old school gamers know what I mean ;) Overall, I loved it, and rate it the best game since Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. No reservations about recommending this game.
Playable, but forgettable, 06 Feb 2006
I received Geist as a Christmas present and I was looking forward to playing it. However, I soon found it to be not quite to be what I was expecting. The storyline is that whilst investigating Volks Corp, you are captured and submitted to an experiment that separates your soul from your body in order to train you as a Spec Ops - a special spirit operative than can possess world leaders and bend them to the will of the shadowy CEO of Volks Corp. However, during the training process the machinery malfunctions, and you are freed, and thus are able to explore Volks Corp by possessing those humans, animals or objects you find along the way, in order to find out what is happening and find your body and regain it. In principle it sounds excellent but turns out to be rather too formulaic. You are not free to explore as you will but must progress along a certain route - hence, you can only possess certain things and certain people. If you possess someone and you allow him/her/it to die, then often you have to restart the level as you require that host to complete the stage. What is quite entertaining is the fact that in order to possess someone, you have to scare them - hence, you spend a lot of time finding the "scare sequences" you need, which you do by possessing objects near to your planned host and making them do weird things - fire extinguishers fire off, mirrors crack, weird displays appear on computer screens, sinks start choking out blood. These can be quite entertaining but the formulaic nature slightly ruins it; it is simply a case of finding the object you need to possess and hitting the button to make it perform the preprepared action. The first person fighting is rather dull; you spend much of your time possessing soldiers with fairly basic assault rifles. The controls aren't fantastic with none of the realism you get in other games - aiming is simply a case of lining up the crosshairs which will then stay in position and firing off a few rounds. Each host can preform a "special action" but often this is boring or pointless; animal hosts make a noise, some soldiers duck, some special hosts like scientists jump. Ultimately, the game becomes an attempt to get from one place to the next by following the preprepared route. The puzzles are generally fairly basic and there are plenty of clues for how to solve them. The fighting aspect of the game could have been done better and although possessing is fun, you can only possess certain hosts when really you would like to possess anyone you see. However, the graphics are pretty good, the sound is good and the storyline is long enough to keep you diverted for a while. It is worth playing, but it isn't going to stick in your mind for long afterwards.
Same old same old, 19 Nov 2005
I was really looking forward to this game, especially after seeing advertising on the TV. After all the hype, it is just another Silicon Valley (itself flawed but a much better game),on the N64, but with the first person shooter element added. Shame, it could have been excellent.
Nice ideas but flawed., 19 Oct 2005
Geist has been in development over at N-SPACE almost as long as video games them selves and it has always been a game i was looking foward to because of the unique posessing elements, essentialy Geist is a mix between a FPS,FPA(first person shooter/adventure)and survival horror game you play as john ramai a sientist who has been captured in a militry opperation experimented on and his soul ripped from his body and now you wander the corridors as a ghost scaring the hell out of every one in site.Ok so the game sounds quite cool right? well geist is like watching pulp fiction on a black and white T.V with bad reception as in it has great ideas some good moments but the game is seriously flawed, at first the posession element seems outstanding you blow up a computer to get the attention of the guard by this time he is a little nervious you then fly in to the rubbish bin next to him and set the contents on fire, this really scares his and now you can posess him and control his body but with in a few levels it starts getting boring because after you have scared a few people they are all exactly the same and it feels very repetative. For me the shooting sections were the best but they wern't great, the enemi AI is terrible you can kill a soldier but his mate 10 foot away wont even realise and allowes you to easly shoot him strait in the head, energy packs are found on every corner making it very hard to die aswell as your unlimited ammo and some of the boss fights are so boring you will want to turn off your Gamecube(although a few boss fights are also good), Also when you posess a soldier you can only use the wepon he was holding when you posessed him even though guns should be lying every where since you just shot down a few hundered people. The multi-player although having some really cool ideas like human vs ghost(the human trys to kill a ghost by shooting and ghost trys to posess human, once posessed you can take controll of the human and lead him to his death)matches are also flawed because it is almost impossible for the human to win. The graphics are top notch looks very realistic there is some slowdown though every now and then Like i sayed earlier Geist showed massive potential but dosent deliver, how about a revolution sequal made by retro studios Nintendo?

Sadly, the live action scenes are gone too, bu | | |
