In a nutshell:The portable phenomenon that has taken Japan by storm finally hits the UK. Part puzzle game, part self improvement tool this is the only game that's both lots of fun and good for you - and that's before you even start on Sudoku! The lowdown: Nothing about this game is ordinary, from the price to the way you hold the DS while playing it (vertically, as if you were reading a book). The basic idea is that you play through a series of puzzles each day, for about 10 minutes, and at the end of each session the "age" of your brain is calculated. The puzzles themselves range from simple maths questions to spot the difference, memorisation and comprehension. All of the answers are inputted either by drawing the answer on the touchscreen or speaking it into the DS's in-built microphone. There's also a multiplayer mode for up to 15 people where you can try and compete to record the youngest brain age. Most exciting moment: A brand new addition to the game, not included in the Japanese version, is a special DS version of Sudoku. This works great on the DS's touch screen and is worth the already low price of admission on its own. Since you ask: A sister title to Brain Training, named Big Brain Academy, is due for release in July and offers to "weigh" your brain and improve specific skills such as memorisation and analysis. A direct sequel to Brain Training has also been released in Japan but is not yet scheduled for released in the UK. The bottom line: The only game that really is for the whole family - from kids to OAPs. Harrison DentGive your gray matter the workout that it needs to stay sharp, focused and young. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day is inspired by a book that was written by Professor Ryuta Kawashima, a prominent Japanese neurologist. His theories revolve around keeping brains young by performing mental activities quickly.
When users first start a new game, they will be given a Brain Age Check that determines the age of their brains. Each day, they can compete for the high score in any activities that they have unlocked. They also can check the age of their brains once per day. The more training they do, the more activities they will unlock. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day is designed to be played in small chunks over a long period of time and can hold data from a year of activity.
Features:
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day is a series of mini-games designed to give brains a workout. Activities include performing simple math problems, counting people going in and out of a house, drawing pictures on the touch screen and reading classic literature out loud.
When users start a new game, they will take a series of tests and get a score that shows how old their brains are. This number is called the "Brain Age." As they use the software over a series weeks and months, their mental acuity will improve and the Brain Age will drop, indicating a younger, healthier brain. Progress is charted in graph form.
Users can keep up to four save files on one game card. Sharing a game allows them to compare their results with those of family and friends. Users also can send a demo version of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day to friends or compete with up to 16 players in a battle to see who can solve math problems the fastest.

Really bad character and voice recognition, 20 Aug 2008
The character recognition is dire - enter a 1 then a 2 with an obvious gap between for 12 and it sees a 4 ! Enter a 1 and a 3 and it interprets a 9. It frequently fails to recognise Yellow (the only 2 syllable colour in the game and it interprets as Red). Most software lets you adjust for your own voice - this does not. You cannot correct wrong scores. I am now aware that the Brain Training has been panned on BBCs Watchdog - I wish I had seen it. mental exercise is fun, 19 Aug 2008
If you are looking for a game that gives your brain some stimulation, then this is for you. It is simply addictive because you are challenged to beat your previous best. When you record a flyer ( best record ) a train goes by and the game creator gives you emphatic praise.
There is a number challenge (for example) involving people walking in and out of a house. You have to count the number of people coming and going and estimate how many are left in the house. Simple? You should try it. I managed to get two right out of five. I was disappointed with my first effort but I was rewarded with a Train!
Give this a go. You will not be disappointed.
Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How old is your brain?, 19 Aug 2008
I have just recently bought a Nintendo lite, and this is one of the first games I played, and I can honestly say , it is really good fun, despite the fact that I scored an 80 year old brain on my first attempt (I am only 37!!)
I have never been a big maths fan, but this IS fun, let all your friends try it too. Very engaging, highly recommended.
Good game but gets boring and frustrating, 07 Aug 2008
This game can be great fun but, it has its limits. I find that it can quickly become boring and repetative. It can also be quite frustrating as the voice recognition is sometimes poor and you find yourself yelling at it to get it to regonise what you are saying, in addition sometimes it does not recognise what you are writing.
Dr Kawashimas "waffling" can become rather tiresome as well!
Good outweighs the bad. , 26 Jul 2008
I agree that this game can get incredibly boring and frustrating due to Kawashimas comments but simply by selecting that you cannot talk when you are doing the test will lower your brain age. The variety of games does get boring but unlocking them all is fun so until you've done that the game definitely keeps you interested. Worth playing.

Product Description
In a nutshell: Possibly the least obscure game title ever, this does exactly what it says on the tin with forty-two classics from chess and backgammon, to darts, poker, bridge and solitaire. The lowdown: The surprising thing about this game is that nobody's thought to do it before. The games are split into three varieties of card game and two of board games, plus a selection of "action" games including bowling, darts and billiards. Playing the card games is just as easy as you'd expect with two screens and a stylus, whether it's Old Maid and Pig or Texas Hold `Em and Bridge. The board games work just as well, with Chinese Checkers, Checkers (i.e. Draughts), Dots and Boxes and more. You'll also find games like Turncoat (i.e. Othello), "Connect Five", Ludo, Mahjong and Solitaire. You have got to go to some effort not to find something of interest amongst this selection. Most exciting moment: The best thing about having so many games is that, except for the ones that are purposefully single player, they can all be played online. If you're playing against a friend you can even chat using a PictoChat style interface. Since you ask: The Japanese and Western versions of the game have several different exclusive games. Japan never got Texas Hold 'Em, Dots and Boxes, Grid Attack, Ludo, Dominoes, Escape or Mahjong Solitaire but instead have Napoleon, Goninkan, Bozumekuri, Sugoroku, Size Game, Last One and Mini Golf in their version. The bottom line: The one video games compendium that really is for everyone. - HARRISON DENT42 All-Time Classics brings all the best-loved card, board and parlour games to Nintendo DS for anyone to play; with simple touch screen control and a multiplayer mode that pits your skills against players across the world! With no boards to set up or cards to deal out, you can get straight into the action in seconds and play more than 40 gaming favourites - from draughts to darts, poker to bridge, and backgammon to billiards - with simple touch screen control. You can play solo or challenge up to seven friends by sharing one game card. And if you don't have anyone to play with, simply log on to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and find opponents across Europe or in the US. You can even chat to each other, PictoChat-style, while you play!

Nintendo DS lite 42 all-time classics, 19 Aug 2008
This is the first game I got with my DS, best thing I could have bought, loads of games, new ones and old favorites. It really gets your brain going, there is some thing for everyone.Very good value for money, (these DS games can be quite pricey)I cant put the thing down, even my husband is fighting over it. I highly recommend this game , especially to the more mature buyer.
Full of Fun!, 31 Jul 2008
This game gives a very open choice of games you can play. For example, there is: solitaire, escape, blackjack, checkers, chinese checkers, spit and pig to name just a few. You shouldn't be put off if you don't know how to play one of the games, as they all come with very simple, but detailed instructions which you can access via each game. You can also compete against other people, which is also a really fun option. Challenge your family and friends and see if they can beat you on the whole variety of classics this game offers. Definitely a winner - unlimited fun every time.
I can't put it down!, 15 Jul 2008
This is a great game with something for everyone. There are familiar card games such as old maid and rummy and "action" games like bowling and darts. There are games suitable for all ages because they range from the simple (memory) to the more advanced (chess).
When you start up the game, there are 3 single player modes - free play, stamp mode or mission.
- Free play allows you to choose a game and set the ability level and number of players.
- Stamp mode is a great way to try out all of the games because you have to work your way through all of them in order (and gets around your natural tendency to only play the familiar games)
- Mission mode gives you the chance to hone your skills by reaching targets such as stacking 20 blocks on their short sides in balance.
By playing stamp mode and mission mode, you can unlock new games and user pictures and the more you win games in free mode, the more designs you unlock.
Multiplayer mode is also fun, my Mum has the game too and we enjoy playing against each other at everything from backgammon to word balloon. It also keeps a record of how many games each of you win and lets you chat while playing.
In conclusion, this game's a great way for you to play your favourite card and board games without the equipment, while you're on the move or alone if there's no one around. You might even find some new favourites!

I am a new ds owner. My son bought me one for my birthday and, being a pensioner, I was sceptical but went along with it. I tried a couple of training games but then I ordered this one! WOW! I can't stop playing it. Have had it a couple of months now and play almost every day. When I'm not playing it I look forward to a moment to get stuck into it again. I love all the games and particularly enjoy playing 'human' opponents via the wireless connection. Would not be without it and I get quite upset when my grandchildren want to have a go!!!!

Product Description
For over a decade now fans have been wondering just what a team-up between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but it's fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. It's officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events you'd expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting. More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. You'd expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonic's incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fool's joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Harrison Dent

Jake's Balanced Reviews - Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, 29 Apr 2008
This has to be one of the most addictive games I have played in a long time. You will find yourself trying to get the gold medals in all events in just 30 minutes. But, every good game has to have some negatives, right? Kind of... not...
Gameplay --> 9.6/10 The game's events are either controlled soley with the stylus, the buttons, or an intelligent mix of both. The trampoline event, for instance, will have you drawing either a straight line up, a right angled line or tapping the screen three times. Sounds simple? Not when you're on a strict time limit and there are fifteen commands to put in.
Graphics --> 9.4/10 This has to be as good as it gets for the Nintendo DS. Perfect cell-shaded characters mean a lot of fun with the visuals. There's nothing like seeing fully rendered Mario and Sonic characters racing each other in the 100m dash.
Audio --> 9.7/10 This was so close to a 10, but after playing it again to make sure I get this review balanced, i noticed that the music is a little repetitive. You really notice it when you actually focus on it, but you don't really, so it's not much of a problem.
Multiplayer --> 9.9/10 Very good, and there is the option to play with a friend who does not have the game ("DS Download Play"), so props for that.
Replay Value --> 10/10 As I said above, you will try so hard to get the gold medals that you will be playing events over and over again until you get them. There are also the challenges (5 for each character, plus a secret 6th) that do not need to be completed, but you get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing a character have a full circle of stars in his stats screen at the character selection.
Overall --> 9.8/10 (5 stars) Nothing else to say, only it's addictive and, most importantly, fun. Well worth the money.
Carrying the torch for Mario and Sonic, 16 Apr 2008
I remember being young and having Daley Thompson's Decathalon for my ZX Spectrum (over twenty years ago) - which largely required hammering alternate keys very quickly to race ahead. So, I approached this game with some trepidation - would it be more of the same?
Thankfully, the answer is no. Sega have used the technology of the DS to make the games varied and engaging; whilst there is inevitably some slight repetition the context is different in each case. For example, the buttons are used for various functions, the touch screen allows you to waggle the stylus back and forth to run, to aim a jump or arrow, the microphone allows you to clap and encourage a long jump. Unlike some other sports games of recent years, this also goes a lot wider than track and field; archery and swimming are favourites of ours. Recommended!
(And for those of you Nintendo fanboys who also have a Wii, yes, it is worth getting both games - each takes advantage of the different platform, and has a different range of events)
Mario and Sonic at the olyimpic games (DS), 22 Mar 2008
Mario and Sonic is the best DS game I have because it's graphics are bright and colorful and the controls are amazing! You use every single function the DS has and they all make sense. There are 24 events (more that the wii game)
and they are all fun and challenging. The sound is amazing, catchy and so addictive. You can chose up to 16 characters. Once you unlock all the events you can work on circuit or mission mode. You can play with friends up to 4 players with 1 game card but only some of the events are available but still good fun. It's such a good game. It is way better than the wii game. Just get it and I promise you you'll love it!

BEST DS GAME EVERRRR!!!, 21 Aug 2008
This is the best DS game by far are so are the other mario ones too! Get to choose from all your faviourite Super Mario characters and choose their vehicles and the track and you're off, there's also an opportunity for you to lock more things! If you have a DS then you must have this game too!! Great on multiplayer for racing with friends! FAB!!
Great fun, 13 Aug 2008
As Mario Kart on the SNES was a most beloved game of mine as a child, I bought this pretty quickly after getting a DS. It consists of 4 brand new cups and 4 cups with tracks from the previous versions of this game, so has a sense of nostalgia as well. Lots of drivers and cars to choose from and some new games. It's most fun when you are playing against someone else, but is still very much enjoyable playing alone, either on Time Trials or Grand Prix.
mario Kart DS, 11 Aug 2008
I bought this for my daughters. They think it is great. Plenty of different options to play not bored of it yet. I have even had a go and enjoyed it.
Perfect, 26 Jul 2008
This game is perfect, the controls work well and there is a wide choice of characters. I often play this game in short bursts because the courses can become repetitive. I can play this game every few weeks without getting bored. In my opinion this is what makes the game so perfect. I often find I complete a game and then never play it again however with this game I have unlocked everything yet I have kept playing it over and over again. A great game for a car journey or 15-30 minutes you need to fill.
Fun, fun, fun!!!, 24 Jul 2008
I bought this game a few days ago and I must say, it is really good. I remember playing Mario Kart with my school mates on the SNES back in the Nineties and this version is just as good - if not better! The presentation, graphics, sound and game mechanics are perfectly executed. In particular, the handling of the Karts, based on the individual attributes of each of the characters, is a joy.
This beats most of the drivel that is out there at the moment. Games should be about escapism and fun (I'm looking at you GTA IV). The DS is the best console out there at the moment (I have owned every major console since the old Atari that was finished in wood and came with PacMan and Pong).
I have not gone online yet but, from reading other reviews that will be a blast too! In short - BUY THIS GAME!!!

This a great puzzle pack......BUT I do find it very difficult to get it actually to get to the puzzle or game. The opening list of things to press to tell the DS to start up the chosen game seems to be over complicated.I do sometimes find I spend more time getting the thing up and running, hence have lost much playing time, and I certainly cannot pick it up casually play a short game or do a crossword unless I have plenty of time.Once it is in the puzzle mode all is fine......but then I am loathed to switch it off knowing I will have to go through the whole drama to start it up again !!!!!
Overall quite good, but disappointed with variety of games, 14 Aug 2008
Having purchased "The Puzzler" magazine for a lot of years (20+) I always enjoyed the wide range of different types of puzzles portrayed and, as such, I eagerly awaited the delivery of my Nintendo DS version.
I was disappointed to see that there are only four types of game available: crosswords, word searches, fitwords (where you have to fit all the words into a blank grid) and sudoku. No sign of the logic problems, or Jigwords, or codebreakers!
Having said that, the games are quite good and the interface is intuitive. I travel a lot so this will probably while away many an hour in airport departure lounges, as well as helping to keep the old grey matter active.
a game you wont put down, 09 Aug 2008
i recieved puzzler ds in the post today and when i picked it up to play
i found i was well pleased with my purchase. it has 4 diffrent games suduko fitword crossword and wordsearch with loads of different game modes
including puzzler tournament, quick blast ,simply puzzle, fast and fun, and head to head.all modes and games have instructions and hints to help if you get stuck.i have played all 4 games in puzzler tournament mode only and found them easy to play and with ease of use.i highly recommend this game for people that like puzzles etc i can even do the crosswords without help unlike the sun crossword on ds.
A winner for puzzle fans!, 06 Aug 2008
I'm a big fan of those puzzle books you get at railway stations, so when my boyfriend bought me this for our Nintendo I was quite excited.
You get sudoku, wordsearch, crossword and other word puzzles and you can even choose your difficulty level so if you find you're good at lower levels you can challenge yourself. You can even try and beat your own time limit.
It's really good value for the amount of puzzles you get - keeps you occupied and good practice for your brain cells. Recommended for competitive puzzle fans like me!
Puzzler collection, 04 Aug 2008
A fun package of puzzles - particulary like wordsearch and fitword. Well worth the purchase. Kids also loved helping and can't wait for the Wii version.

Product Description
In a nutshell:It's been over fifteen years since the last Super Mario Bros. but finally Mario is back in a proper 2D platforming adventure. Just because it's old school though doesn't mean it's old hat... The lowdown: Considering the last Super Mario Bros. game is still the best selling video game of all time (17.28 million copies and counting) this has a lot to live up to, but it almost effortlessly captures the action and charm of the old games. The basics of the game are the same as always as you run and jump through mostly horizontally scrolling levels. New to the game are power-ups that turn Mario into a giant or make him really tiny, as well as one that gives him a Koopa shell on his back to attack enemies with. Although the gameplay is all in two dimensions the graphics are 3D, with all new moves such as the triple jump and wall jump added in as well. Most exciting moment: As well as the single player mode there's also a wireless multiplayer mode where you get to battle a friend (as Luigi) across a whole bunch of specially designed levels. Since you ask: As Super Mario World on the SNES (since re-released as Super Mario Advance 2 on the GBA) was subtitled Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan that name couldn't be used for this new game, although that's secretly whatever everyone's calling it - behind Nintendo's back. The bottom line: The impossible has happened: Nintendo have created a worthy follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3! Harrison DentThe first all-new 2D Mario platformer since Super Mario World has arrived! Boasting incredible 3D graphics to accompany classic 2D gameplay, this fast-paced adventure will have Mario fans cheering as they make their way over fields, under water, through castles, and into the air. The power of the DS is used to great effect, and the result is that the Mushroom Kingdom looks more alive than ever. Backgrounds are beautifully layered and every character on screen is presented in gorgeous 3D, with Piranha Plants baring their teeth with wild abandon and Goombas looking almost too cute to stomp on. Just below the surface you will find hundreds of hard-as-nails mini-missions that will force you to reconsider your supposed Super Mario supremacy. The real challenge of the game is tracking down its 240 Star Coins, which allow you to open up paths on the eight world maps. Each level hides three of those shiny collectibles: sometimes they're in plain sight but require a special skill in order to be reached. Other times they're cleverly hidden, and sometimes you will need one of the game's special new power-ups to find them. Nostalgic and new in equal doses, New Super Mario Bros. is, quite simply, a gem of a game.

In short - BUY THIS GAME!!!
helen, 15 Aug 2008
Great game., 25 Aug 2008
This was the first game I got with my DS and I've really enjoyed playing it. I'm not the best games player but this Mario is amazing! The graphics are lovely and it's just generally a really good, fun game to play. There's plenty of levels and various extra things you can unlock too, which makes it even more fun. I also like the way you only need one game card and then someone else with a DS can go against you, playing wirelessly, on the mini games which are surprisingly addictive. Even my dad who thought the idea of me getting Mario was ridiculous was hooked on the card games for hours!
All in all I think it's a brilliant game with hours of fun gameplay and definitely worth getting!
A great game, 03 Aug 2008
We bought this before going on a trip to NZ in February to keep our children amused. They love it and are still happily playing it 6 months later.
Mario Is Back!!!, 20 Jul 2008
I've loved the Super Mario Bros. games ever since I owned Super Mario and Six Golden Coins on my Gameboy Pocket, so I was really excited about buying this game once I bought my Nintendo DS. It really is fantastic! The graphics and gameplay are excellent, though the only downpoint which I've found so far is that there aren't many places to save, so if you run out of lives before you reach certain points, there could be a lot of gaming time going to waste. I'm still working my way through the game and I'm looking forward to completing it but it is certainly a case of so far, so very, very good!
AWESOME, 15 Jul 2008
Ive only recently got a DS lite as a gift and this was the first game i had with it and it is fantastic. I wouldn't call my self a hardcore gamer by any means, i can complete original mario on the super nintendo with my eyes shut from playing when i was younger but this is a whole new level. Im addicted. the graphics are brilliant, the gameplay as good as i remember (if not better) and the mini games are incredibly addictive. when im bored of wasting lives in the main game the mini games are perfect. and the share function is a hell of a good way to waste a week or so! if i had to find a negative point i would say i would like it to use more functions of the ds such as the touch screen and mic but all in all.. i highly recommend.
brilliant all round (age 11), 12 Jul 2008
it is really fun.I definitely recommend this to all ages.
it has quick multi for two -4 players
mario and luigi go to lots of different backgrounds and terrains.
Classic mario game all the usualls plus more.Very well made.

VERY VERY FRUSTRATINGDr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo DS)
mental exercise is fun, 19 Aug 2008
A very moresome game., 21 Jun 2008
Do I love it??....YES
Will kids love it?...YES
Will big kids love it?...YES
A highly addictive and enjoyable compedium of different game types for all the family no matter what age.You will not be able to put it down.
Totally Addictive!, 23 Apr 2008
I am a new ds owner. My son bought me one for my birthday and, being a pensioner, I was sceptical but went along with it. I tried a couple of training games but then I ordered this one! WOW! I can't stop playing it. Have had it a couple of months now and play almost every day. When I'm not playing it I look forward to a moment to get stuck into it again. I love all the games and particularly enjoy playing 'human' opponents via the wireless connection. Would not be without it and I get quite upset when my grandchildren want to have a go!!!!
The best game on the ds!!!, 16 May 2008
Great fun, just as good as the wii version, if you have a ds and not this game then you are missing out.
Wonderful!, 30 Apr 2008
I am 7 years old,and i have really enjoyed this game. It's brilliant! I saw an ad on tv,and bought it and i`m not not in the slightest bit disappointed! You can do lots of activities, they are all great! My favourite character is Amy. Buy it!!!!
